Stanfield is a small town on big lots, and the garage stock shows it. Brick ranches from the era when one bay and a wood door was plenty. Farmhouses with a detached shop out back that has taken on more equipment than the door was ever sized to cover. People live with that noise for years and then call when a roller finally comes off the track and the section bends. Cleaning and lubricating the moving parts is a short job. Straightening a bent section is not.

What Piedmont weather does to a door

Steel springs wear out by cycles. Every trip up and down spends one, so a shop door that opens ten times a day is on a shorter clock than a door that sees one commute. The morning a spring finally lets go is usually a cold one, because the metal is stiffest after a cold night and the first lift is the hardest pull it will ever get. A door that has started rising crooked, or dropping the last stretch instead of settling, is telling you it is close.

Summers here are humid enough that a steel door sweats on the inside when the shop is unheated, and that moisture sits on the bottom section and on every fastener it can find. Rust starts at the bottom hinge and the bottom fixture, the two parts that carry the most load, and it works quietly for a couple of seasons before anything looks wrong from the driveway. On a wood door the same damp swells the stiles until the door binds in the opening and the opener strains against it every cycle.

Maintenance earns its keep out here. Lyn Bartlett wrote about a service call: "He went directly to the problem and fixed it. Then, he serviced moveable parts with lubricant." That second sentence is the part that keeps a door out of trouble later. Pollen coats everything in spring, gravel dust follows it all summer, and a door that gets cleaned and greased once a year runs quiet for years longer than one nobody has touched since the builder hung it.

Openers and gates on a long driveway

Plenty of places around Stanfield sit back off the road behind a gate, and a gate is a harder machine than a garage door. It lives outside in the weather, it runs on a buried line or a solar panel, and the ground under the post moves with the seasons until the leaf drags or the arm binds. An opener that has started to sound like it is working too hard usually is. Most of the time the door is out of balance and the opener has been carrying weight it was never meant to carry, so the springs and the rollers are the fix and the machine gets to stay. When a motor really is finished, the difference a new one makes is something you hear from inside the house. Shannon Hunter wrote after a motor replacement: "my garage closes and opens as it should and it is so smooth and quiet now".

A new door changes the front of a house more than anything else you can spend the same money on, which is why we take time over the panel style and the window layout before anything gets ordered. On a brick ranch a heavy carriage look can fight the house. On a newer place with a wide opening it can be the thing that makes it. We measure the opening and the headroom above it, because a door that fits the wall but not the ceiling is a problem you find on install day.
