Operators, keypads, loop sensors and remotes on driveway gates around Stanly, Union and Cabarrus counties. The gate work runs off the same truck as the garage door work.
How a gate call actually runs
First thing on any gate call is to pull the release and move the gate by hand. A swing gate should travel its whole arc with one hand and stop where you leave it. A slide gate should roll without grinding or hanging up at one spot in the track. If it drags, the operator has been fighting that drag every cycle, and no amount of work on the board or the wiring fixes a gate the motor cannot move easily.
After that comes the electrical side, in a set order: power at the operator while it is actually running, then the limits, then the safety inputs, then the receiver and the remotes. Reading power with the gate sitting still tells you almost nothing, because a weak run of wire looks fine until the motor pulls on it. Most of the calls we get on an older automated gate come back to one of those four things, and they get checked in that order so nothing gets replaced on a guess.
Then it gets cycled and watched through a full open and close, more than once. Limits set so the gate lands where it belongs instead of driving into its stop. Force turned down until the gate backs off an obstruction the way it should, and the safety devices tested with something solid rather than a boot toe. Last thing before we leave, you get shown where the manual release is and how to work it, because the day you need that is never a convenient day.

Power down a long gravel drive
A lot of the gates around here sit at the end of a drive that runs a long way back from the road, and the wire feeding the operator was often run by whoever dug the trench. Undersized wire over that kind of distance drops voltage before it ever reaches the motor. The gate then behaves like a haunted thing, opening fine on a cool morning and stalling halfway up the drive on a hot afternoon. Nothing is wrong with the operator. It is being starved.
Water is the other half of it. Clay holds water instead of letting it drain, so a conduit that dips anywhere along the run fills up and sits full, and any splice down in that trench corrodes green. Summer storms here bring the second problem. A surge does not usually come in through the panel, it comes up the buried loop wire or the long run to the keypad, and it takes out the board on its way. If a gate has died twice in one storm season, that is what we go looking for.
Some of the properties out past Albemarle have no power anywhere near the road end of the drive, and trenching a few hundred feet of conduit through pasture is a project on its own. Solar is the usual answer there, with a panel sized for how many times a day the gate really runs and a battery that carries it through a week of gray weather. Get that sizing wrong and the gate opens beautifully in August and quits on you every January afternoon, which is the season nobody tests in.
Loops, eyes and the closing gate
An exit loop is a coil of wire in a saw cut in the drive, sealed over, that senses the metal in a car and opens the gate on the way out. It only works in something you can cut, so a poured concrete or asphalt apron gets a loop and a gravel drive does not. On gravel we use a free exit sensor instead, aimed down the drive, and the aim matters more than people expect. Point it too wide and the gate opens for the dog.
Photo eyes are the pair of small lenses facing each other across the opening, and they are the reason a gate stops instead of closing on the roof of a car. They fail in ordinary ways. A spider builds a web across the lens overnight, or spring pollen coats everything and blinds them. Low winter sun sits right in the receiver at the same hour every afternoon and the gate refuses to move. A gate that has started closing on its own schedule is usually telling you about its eyes.
What we will not do is jumper out a safety input to stop a nuisance trip. It is a quick fix that works right up until the afternoon somebody is standing in the opening, and by then the gate has no way to know. If an eye keeps tripping, the answer is finding out why, and it is usually a post that has shifted or a bracket a bumper caught. Force gets set the same way, low enough that the gate backs off a fender instead of pushing through it.
Keypads, clickers and letting people in
Every automated gate ends up with a list of people who need through it: the household, whoever cuts the grass, the propane truck, a delivery driver who is not going to call ahead. That list is what decides the hardware. A keypad set at driver's window height on the entry side covers most of it, and codes can be changed the week the lawn service changes hands. A wireless keypad saves a trench. A wired one does not need a battery swapped on a cold morning.
Remotes are the part households run short on. One clicker gets moved between two trucks, somebody borrows it, and then the gate is left open all afternoon because it is easier than getting out. Adding remotes is usually straightforward, as long as the receiver still has room and we know what it is listening for. If the receiver is old enough that nothing is made for it anymore, swapping the receiver and reprogramming what everyone carries is a smaller job than replacing an operator that still runs fine.
Where the gate sits matters as much as what is on it. A gate right up on one of the two lane roads out here leaves you stopped in the lane while it swings, so the setup has to open fast enough and the keypad has to sit where you can reach it without unbuckling. Set back off a long drive, none of that applies and you can take your time. We look at the approach before deciding where anything mounts, because moving a keypad post later means digging twice.
Posts, clay and a gate that sags
Gate posts around Stanfield are set in Piedmont clay, which swells when it is wet and shrinks tight when it dries out. Add a winter of shallow freezing and thawing and a post that was plumb in the spring is leaning by the next one. You see it in the gate before you see it in the post, because the leaf drops at the latch end and the operator starts straining at the same point in the arc every cycle.
Slide gates have their own version of this. The track fills with gravel washed down off the drive, and with pine straw and mud that dries hard in there, so the gate climbs over the debris instead of rolling through. The operator reads that as an obstruction and reverses, or it does not, and it grinds the wheels flat. Chain slack does the same thing from a different direction, letting the gate coast past where the limit expects it to stop. Both take a few minutes to catch early and turn into a bigger job if they are left.
So before the force gets touched, the gate gets hung right. Hinges adjusted, and a leaning post or a sagging tube gate on a farm drive dealt with before anything electrical gets blamed. A heavy ornamental gate at a newer place in Union County pulls harder on its hinges than a light farm gate ever will, and it will find a soft post faster. Once the gate swings clean and stops where it should, the limits and the force get reset to the gate as it is now, not as it was when somebody set it years back.

Nine times out of ten it is the photo eyes, which stop the gate any time they think something is in the opening. A web across the lens or a bracket knocked out of line will both do it. Before you call, look at the small indicator lights on both eyes and see whether they agree with each other.
Usually not the whole operator. A surge tends to come up the buried wire and take out the control board or the receiver, and those are separate parts from the motor. We find out what is still getting power before anything gets condemned.
Yes, that is most of what we see on gates. If parts for it are still made, we repair what is on the post. If it has been out of production long enough that nothing fits it, we will tell you that plainly instead of chasing pieces that do not exist.
Usually yes, and it is worth doing at once so the household stops passing one remote around. What decides it is the receiver on the gate and whether it still has room. Keypad codes can be set up so the one you handed the lawn service can be changed on its own.
Our side is the automation and the repair. We put operators, keypads and safety gear on a gate that is already hanging, and we fix what quits on a gate that is already automated. Ironwork and fencing are somebody else's trade.
Every operator has a manual release, and part of the job is showing you where yours is and how to work it, because the day the power drops is not the day to be reading a sticker in the rain. Some setups carry a battery that runs the gate for a while after the power goes. If yours has one, we test whether it still holds anything, since a battery that has sat that long often does not.
